All' ungarese

Note

Commissioned by the Messiaen Festival in Meije for violinist Hae-Sun Kang and pianist Florent Boffard, to both of whom the work is dedicated, All'ungarese refers to the music of Bela Bartok, in particular to the Second Sonata, which I was thinking about while this piece was being written. In fact, taking the Hungarian composer a model, I based my work on several concepts: the rhapsody (the structure of this piece is particularly free and eludes any "logical" schema), the alternation between lyricisme and rhythmicity, and a form of timbral fusion between the instruments. Violent vertical gestures collide with extremely sparse moments, making the discourse elusive. The most erratic score in my catalogue, All'ungarese relates to outsider art, to pure energy. Actually a notated improvisation, with verticality behind the necessity to write, it is a work as equally virtuosic in its density as in its suspense.
